The Ministry of Community and Social Services is pushing for reforms to income security which are expected to benefit all low-income Ontarians. With almost one million people on social assistance in the province, the goal of the reforms is to create a system of support both inside and outside social assistance that provides adequate incomes, is simple to understand and is administered equitably across the province.
Almost 260,000 children in families who receive social assistance will benefit from the full amount of their Canada Child Benefit (CCB) payment. The province announced recently that families receiving social assistance will fully benefit from the proposed new federal Canada Child Benefit (CCB) without any provincial 'clawback’.
The City of Peterborough is undertaking an overall review of the Official Plan with the purpose of updating the planning principles and policies that will determine how our City grows over the next 20 years. Input from the public and stakeholders will be used to finalize the Official Plan for Council’s approval anticipated for fall 2016.
Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) clients with no bank account will be able to receive their benefits on a reloadable payment card rather than receiving a paper cheque.

Poverty remains a growing concern in Peterborough City and County where over 16% of the population and nearly 20% of children live in poverty. Aware of the wide spectrum of poverty issues, the Peterborough Poverty Reduction Network (PPRN) launched on April 13, 2016 “Our Plan for Poverty Reduction”, a comprehensive document that lays down the community’s goals and strategies in combating poverty.
